Owners, admins and members: who can do what on a shared list

Everyone on a shared list has one of three roles:

• Owner: created the list, or had it handed to them. There’s one owner. Their plan (free or Plus) decides what everyone on the list can use.
• Admin: helps run the list. Admins can rename it, invite people (as members or admins), remove members, and make members admins.
• Member: shops from the list. Members add, tick off and delete items like everyone else, but the list’s settings are read-only for them.

Admins can’t delete the list, and can’t change or remove the owner or another admin. Only the owner can do those things.

1. Open the lists menu and tap the settings (gear) icon next to the list.
2. Under Shared with, tap the person’s role.
3. Choose Admin or Member.

The change reaches their phone straight away. If someone loses admin while they have the list’s settings open, Pattlist tells them and takes away the admin controls.

The owner can transfer the list to anyone on it, for example before leaving a shared house. In the list’s settings, tap the person’s role, choose Transfer Ownership, and confirm with Transfer.

• They become the owner, and you become an admin, so you can then leave the list if you want to.
• The list now counts towards their plan. If they’re on the free plan and already own 2 lists, Pattlist refuses the transfer.

In the list’s settings, remove the person from Shared with and confirm. They lose access straight away: the list and its items disappear from their phone. The owner can remove anyone; admins can remove members. You need a connection to remove someone.

Members and admins can leave a list from its settings with Leave List. It’s removed from your account, and you’d need a new invite to rejoin. The owner can’t leave; transfer the list to someone first.

In the list’s settings, the owner and admins can change the List Name and its icon, then tap Save Changes. A list must have a name. The new name appears on everyone’s phone.

Only the owner sees Delete List. Deleting a shared list removes it and its items from every member’s phone, and can’t be undone.
